Slate is frequently grey in colour, however slate occurs in a variety of colours, even from a single location. The colour of natural slate is derived from its chemical and mineral composition, and can vary across a wide range of colours. It was the striking colours of this slate that first caught my attention and encouraged me to carefully navigate across a slope covered in loose, wet shale to reach a point where I could take a closer look. I was immediately taken in by the fantastic pattern of cracks and fissures which presented themselves in a central triangular structure. I set up the tripod and balanced precariously on the loose shale, hoping that my tripod didn’t move before I was able to create the image. This is one of a series of images from this location which really capture my imagination.
