German Engineering

Germany has a well deserved reputation across the world for the high quality of its engineering. The above image provides a visual example of that craftsmanship. What is truly amazing is the fact that this building was built in 1770, over 250 years ago, without much of the equipment that is available to modern day engineers. The building originally housed a foundry, and today has been converted into a museum to educate visitors in the working conditions of that period, and to showcase some of the items that were produced. The photograph was very challenging to take because of the wide angle, and the need to capture the correct alignment and perspective. The real pleasure was not taking the photograph but the time spent marvelling at the complexity of the structure and thinking about the engineering challenge that presented itself to the architects and builders.
