Like many landscape photographers, when starting out my initial focus was on creating images of the wider vista, particularly at sunrise or sunset, or in dramatic conditions. I travelled to popular locations and tried to recreate images that had attracted me to landscape photography in the first place. That was a good starting point because it helped me to judge how my photography was improving because I had a reference point with photographs taken by others at the same locations. I quickly realised that I wasn’t creating anything unique, nor was I taking a closer look at the environment I was working in. That realisation started an interest in the ‘inner landscape’, the more detailed aspects of nature, an interest that has grown and become my real passion. I will continue to create images of the wider landscape, but will always consider whether there is something closer to my eye that attracts my interest.
